Right on the banks of the Alb is the Gummi-Bärchen, an element-i child care centre that was established at the initiative of the company Michelin. The facility offers 55 places for children aged between six months and six years.

The building, a sturdy, solid wood structure, is a well-lit two-storey construction that offers all manner of opportunities with its “little town” architectural motto. The rooms and areas have been designed on the basis of the latest findings of educational research to facilitate the work of the educators. On the ground floor and first floor there are numerous opportunities for all of the children to play and rest. The day care centre also has a directly adjacent outdoor play area with partially roofed work yards that allow children to express their creativity outdoors under almost any weather conditions.

The construction and operation of the facility seeks to address and overcome environmental challenges. In addition to the energy-saving wood structure, the heating and hot water are provided by a heat exchanger supplied with geothermal energy. The flat roof of the day care centre also features 88 solar power modules that generate most of the building’s electricity needs through sunlight. The painting of the interior focused on using environmentally friendly, pollutant-free paints.
